In Honor of Adoptive Parents, Birthmothers and Adoptees
Los Angeles, California |
What:
Sneak Preview screening of UNLOCKING THE HEART OF ADOPTION a documentary by Sheila Ganz
In 1968, twenty-year-old Sheila Ganz was raped became pregnant and unwillingly
relinquished her newborn daughter for adoption. Twenty years later, she became an adoption
reform advocate and began her first film, UNLOCKING THE HEART OF ADOPTION. This 56-minute
documentary chronicles her journey as a birthmother, and compelling first person stories
of adoptees, birthparents and adoptive parents in same race and transracial adoptions.
Their stories run the emotional gamut from
Hollywood-style 'happy endings' to heart breaking tragedy, with bittersweet accounts of
loss, questions of identity, ethnicity and the need to know truth interwoven with
fascinating historical background in between. As Sheila tells her story, she creates a
sculpture of a mother holding her baby in a hospital bed using chicken wire, bamboo,
burlap and plaster.
Narrated by Helen Hill, adoptee and Chief
Petitioner of Oregon's ballot Measure 58, which gives adult adoptees in Oregon
unconditional access to their original birth certificate. This exciting Sneak Preview of
UNLOCKING THE HEART OF ADOPTION proffers a brave, activist agenda through a deeply
personal lens.

What:
MISS MEMORIAL lead by MISS Foundation Founder JoAnne Caciatore hosted at Huntington Beach
Hospital along with MISS Facilitators from around the state of California including Katie
Hodge (Director of Ops), and Angela Iverson (FABA Director).
As founder of MISS Foundation, Joanne Cacciatore helps to ensure that no family endure the
trauma of a child's death alone: MISS is committed to the memory of the children who
lived, who died, and who continue - even in death - to matter. After the loss of her baby
daughter, Cheyenne, Joanne Cacciatore founded a movement to change the way stillbirths are
viewed. The MISSing Angels Bill mandates that, instead of being issued a "Certificate
of Fetal Death" upon delivering a stillborn baby, the mother will receive a
"Certificate of Birth Resulting in Stillbirth." Arizona, the first state to sign
the bill into law in June 2001, was followed by additional states that have since passed
this legislation.
